Happy Mother's Day!

from Tim and Ian
at Yellowstone Park

These shots were all taken on 5/10/2003, the day before Mother's Day, during Susan's requested trip to Yellowstone. She wanted to see some more bears, but what we got were giant herds of buffalo, elk, and moose blocking the roads, and a couple of coyotes as well. The buffalos had lots of new babies, and we got to see them cross a big stream. All made it except one baby, and the mother waited on the other side (eating grass), while the baby paced back and forth. It finally got up enough courage to blast through the fast moving stream, and the mother and baby actually looked like they were celebrating after the successful crossing, according to Susan.

The one big buffalo pictured by the Old Faithful area buildings (below) actually walked right up through the parking lot to everyone's amazement, and stood literally within touching distance of our truck next to the brown garbage can. We just sat there motionless while he eyeballed us, gnawed at some meager vegetation in the rocky ground, snorted, and then pooped. I was afraid to roll up the window because I didn't want to spook him. The horns were big and sharp looking. Susan was of course freaking out...

Ian and Susan are pictured above by the Fountain Paint Pot Geysers. You can see the big one spraying up in the air right behind Ian's head in his close-up shot. Stinky sulpher.

Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers. You know who you are.
