CRECC 2003: Ray Hunt of Deer Lodge, Montana, set a new CRECC course record and gracefully collected the cash prize purse of $1.14.
Dressed in a sleek, silky Versace gown, he blew away the rest of the field at a 5:27 clip and buried them in the
fashion department as well. One biker
(I later discovered he was the local Catholic priest) politely waited at the side of the trail as Ray blew by.
When the rest of the "pack" neared the unsuspecting biker minutes later, someone shouted, "Hey, have you seen a guy in a red dress?"
The priest seemed impressed beyond words. Yours Truly ran the race, (sadly without a dress -
I split the back out of my red polka dot number two years ago).
It was the first, and very likely the last time I will
ever run one of my own sadistic, gradual-uphill-finish type courses. It was in the high 90s yet again, and by race time,
the blacktop was already hot, so the fake, dry, Oreo cookies were especially tasty at the finish line. Fashion runners-up,
including John Wulf, Clifford Kindt, and Leonard Baluski, were challenged this year by several dogs
wearing red bandanas - a new CRECC twist - and by Dan Harrington's Hawaiian shirt.
Brian Mastel took second with an impressive 27:48, but like me, was shunned by the rest of the field socially
for poor fashion sense.
Eddi Walker took the women's overall trophy with a steady, even pace, followed by Sheila Franey and Cheryl Peterslie.
